About us

Intuitivestructure was founded in 2022, specifically to train structural engineers to develop an intuitive understanding of structural behaviour and design based on the pioneering work by Dr David Brohn MBE PhD CEng FIStructE.

Purpose

Structural engineers are faced with a number of significant challenges in the design office.

The situation nowadays is complicated by the prevalence of powerful software which can analyse and size elements for large 3D models including entire building frames. Equally, modern codes of practice such as Eurocode tend to be labyrinthine and opaque.

How does an engineer validate the output from analysis software or structural sizes from many pages of calculations to Eurocode?

Long-term study shows that the ability to see and predict how a structure will behave is not guaranteed by the traditional academic approach which tends to teach structural analysis by mathematical algorithms.

Intuitivestructure, following the great work of Dr David Brohn, is aware of and concerned about this issue and so aims to teach engineers to develop an intuitive understanding  of structural behaviour and design to allow them to correctly configure designs and analysis models and then to see errors in output from the computer or a code of practice.

The purpose is to empower the engineer, to raise their confidence and put them in control of their designs rather than the writers of codes or software.

Our Courses

We offer two 2-day training courses:

  • Understanding Structural Behaviour
  • Understanding Structural Design

About Dr David Brohn MBE PhD CEng FIStructE

The creation and purpose of Intuitivestructure Limited was inspired by Dr David Brohn.

David is a Structural Engineer who specialises in teaching the fundamentals of structural analysis and structural behaviour.

David’s career spans over fifty years. One of David’s most prominent works is his 1984 book, ‘Understanding Structural Analysis’, which accompanies a variety of structural engineering courses, explaining how an understanding of structural behaviour is a crucial skill which underpins the process of structural modelling.

Resources David has developed are used widely in universities across the UK and abroad and encourage the development of training strategies to replace the informal development procedures for analysis and design that are currently the standard in education.

In 2022, David was awarded an MBE in the Jubilee Honours for his contribution to Structural Engineering, and providing a unique and radical approach to the teaching of an understanding of structural behaviour.
